Syria: Who are the members of the Supreme Committee for the Preservation of Civil Peace?

One is a governor, another is the dean of the Faculty of Sharia, and the third is a former advisor to the Assad regime.

The Syrian Presidency announced the formation of a supreme committee for the preservation of civil peace to investigate the recent events on the Syrian coast, with a specified period of no more than 30 days during which the committee will submit its report to the presidency from the date of the decision’s issuance.

And the text of the presidential statement published via its Telegram channel, today Sunday, regarding the tasks assigned to that committee, the most prominent of which are:

Direct communication with the residents on the Syrian coast to listen to them, and providing the necessary support to ensure their security and stability, in addition to enhancing national unity in this sensitive phase.

Who are the members of the committee?

According to the statement, three figures have been assigned to execute the tasks and supervise the achievement of its objectives, and they are:

Anas Eirout: A religious and social preacher from Banias, he was renowned as an imam and orator in his city before the Syrian revolution, and he currently serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Sharia and Law at Idlib University under the Salvation Government. He holds a PhD in Islamic Economics from Lebanon. Eirout played an active role in the early revolutionary movement, assuming the presidency of the Revolutionary Leadership Council in Banias. He later joined the Syrian National Council and the Islamic Liberation Front of Syria, where he emerged as a prominent leader, and held membership in the National Coalition of the Forces of the Syrian Revolution and the Syrian Opposition, as well as in the Syrian Scholars Council. Following the establishment of the Salvation Government, Eirout was appointed to head the Court of Appeals under its Ministry of Justice.

Hassan Sofan: He holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Latakia University and studied Islamic legal sciences at King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia. Known as “Abu al-Bara,” he was a leader of the Ahrar al-Sham movement and later of the Syrian Liberation Front. He served as the head of the Syrian Salvation Government between December 2018 and November 2019. He was governor of Aleppo and has been the governor of Latakia since December 2024. He was imprisoned in Saudi Arabia for a year and a half on charges of communicating with Al-Qaeda and was arrested by the Assad regime, until he was released in a prisoner exchange deal in 2016.

Khaled Al-Ahmad: Born in Homs in 1980, he studied English and grew up in the home of his father, the former Ba'athist leader “Abdullah Al-Ahmad.” He became known for his affiliation with the Syrian Social Nationalist Party. After the Syrian revolution, he grew close to the Assad regime, and one year later he provided security and political consultations to Bashar Assad, eventually becoming known as Assad’s unofficial advisor. He played a role in national reconciliation and held secret diplomatic advisory positions. He held meetings with officials from the United States and the United Nations. In 2018, he was expelled from Syria on charges of financial corruption issued by the Republican Palace.

It is mentioned that earlier, the Syrian presidency had announced the formation of an independent national committee to investigate the events on the Syrian coast, consisting of seven judges tasked with uncovering the causes and circumstances that led to the events, investigating the violations and assaults inflicted on civilians, public institutions, and members of the security forces and the army, identifying those responsible, and referring them to justice.
